Every time you send money through a bank, something invisible happens behind the scenes. The bank checks your balance. Approves the transfer. Updates the records. You trust them to get it right, and they almost always do.

But that also means one institution is in control of the whole system. If it goes down, slows down, or makes a mistake, everyone connected to it feels it.

Bitcoin asked a different question. What if money could move without anyone in charge of it at all?

The answer is the blockchain, a shared ledger that isn’t stored in one place, but copied across thousands of computers around the world.

Every transaction gets grouped into a block. Every block connects to the one before it. And because the whole network holds a copy, no single person can quietly rewrite the past.

So who actually checks that everything’s correct? That job falls to miners and validators, participants who verify transactions and update the ledger, in exchange for a reward paid in the very cryptocurrency they’re helping secure.

No bank. No central authority. Just a network of participants, a shared ledger, and a set of rules everyone can verify for themselves.
